SAHER KI MASJID, GUJARAT
Project Brief
Saher Ki Masjid, built in the 15th–16th century for the Gujarat Sultanate’s royal family, is a striking blend of architectural styles. Set on a raised platform with two minarets and five grand domes, it now stands as part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park.
Design Intent
Working within ASI restrictions, the lighting design was crafted with minimal intervention to respect the monument’s heritage. The vision was to reveal its architectural character after dusk — pathways were softly lit to guide visitors, arches highlighted with uplights to mark entry, and domes washed in a gentle, wide-beam glow. Asymmetrical grazers brought depth and drama to the textured walls, while the minaret stood gracefully illuminated with pole-mounted floods. Together, these layers of light created a balanced composition that preserved the monument’s dignity while enriching the night-time experience with a poetic sense of presence.
