ITALIAN HERITAGE, ROME

Project Brief

This Romanesque church is defined by its solid stone masonry, symmetrical salient façade, and fortress-like bell tower. The central rose window and arched openings bring in restrained light, while the carved entrance portal highlights religious symbolism and craftsmanship. With its heavy proportions and minimal ornamentation, the building reflects the Romanesque ideals of strength, permanence, and spiritual authority, while also hinting at early Gothic influence through the circular window form.

Design Intent

The lighting design highlights the church’s Romanesque character with grazing up lights that reveal the stone texture and emphasize the central portal and fresco as the spiritual focal point. Warm accents on the bell tower enhance its vertical prominence, while a modern courtyard installation of light rods creates a subtle dialogue between tradition and contemporary design. The scheme balances reverence and innovation, offering a timeless and inviting night-time identity.
